Basics Of Effective Acne Treatment
The first step in effective acne treatment is knowing your skin type and whether you have mild, moderate, or severe type of acne. Knowing your skin and acne type can help you have a better understanding of your condition which could help speed up treatment.
As an acne sufferer for nearly 20 years, an effective acne treatment that has worked for me is to attack it from two ways. Both over-the-counter topical and dietary changes have given me the result I’ve been searching for years. It hasn’t always been easy and obvious to me to approach acne treatment this way. I had to go through lots of trials and errors to really find a method that works for me, and hopefully it will work for you too.
Now depending on your skin type: dry, oily, sensitive, fair, or combination of, benzoyl peroxide is still by far one of the most popular over-the-counter topical treatment out there. You can find benzoyl peroxide in 2.5% to 10% concentration. Because I have sensitive skin, benzoyl peroxide caused excessive dryness, redness, and even peeling my skin.
Effective Acne Products For Your Acne Treatment
Good over-the-counter topical acne products should have the following ingredients: salicylic acid, azelaic acid and glycolic acid. Through many years of trials and errors, I’ve come to find out that these ingredients are essential to treating acne. Salicylic acid can come in a form of gel, ointment, a pad and cream. I’ve found topical salicylic acid to be great in preventing pimples and getting rid of blemishes.
Salicylic acid is very effective in reducing swelling and redness. I have found this to be a good treatment for me since I use to have severe acne. It also acts as an exfoliant in that it softens and loosens dry, scaly skin so that it falls off easily. Depending on your skin type, you may experience a little dryness or irritation at the beginning of treatment. You also want to gradually apply it to see how your skin adjust to it. I did not experience any problems with salicylic acid.
Ask your dermatologist about azelaic acid if you have mild to moderate acne. When I first had acne, my dermatogist put me on Azelaic acid treatment. It comes in either a gel or cream form and it has helped to clear bumps and lesions. Azelaic acid works by killing bacteria that infect the pores, which is one of the causes that lead to acne.
I did not really see the effect until after a couple of weeks of using it. Ask your dermatologist about the strength of azelaic acid depending on your skin type.
Glycolic acid also works as an exfoliant, similar to that of salicylic acid. Glycolic acid is found in many topical acne treatment. It acts as a peeler by removing the top layer. The solution is applied to the skin for a few minutes and then rinsed away. This method will exfoliate the top skin layers gradually over the a period of several days. This in turn allows new and healthier layer of skin to surface.
I learned through experience never apply glycolic acid on wounds or to broken skin; it burns. You should consider starting this treatment once a week for a few weeks to see how your skin reacts to it. Then gradually increase it to twice a week for a period of several weeks then three times a week. A word of caution don’t instantly think stronger concentration of the solution will get rid of the acne faster. In fact, using stronger solution and more often caused serious irritation and flare ups for me.
Acne Treatment: Big Results By Making Small Changes To Your Diet
The second approach that I’ve taken to treating my severe acne is through changing my diet. Don’t jump to conclusions so quickly and rule out that diet has nothing to with acne. I made the same mistake when I first heard about how a change in diet can have a positive effect in treating acne. You don’t have to make drastic changes to your diet at the beginning, instead make gradual changes like I’ve been suggesting with the topical treatments. If you can make the small changes to your diet, you will mostly like to see big improvements to your acne condition.
Instead of just applying over-the-counter solutions on my acne. I began to slowly eliminate milk and any dairy products from my diet. As I began to reduce my consumption of dairy products, especially milk, I started to see the acne clear up. So I began to do in depth research about the relationship between milk and acne. Doctor Susan C. Taylor, a dermatologist, reported that several studies have concluded milk play a role in acne because of the hormones it contains.
Further research has led me to minimize the consumption of refined sugar, foods with high fat content, processed foods, and refined flour foods such as white bread and white pasta.
Refined sugar foods include white sugar, snacks and drinks like cookies, cakes, fruit juices and sodas. These tempting foods have so much sugar in them that they cause the insulin level in the body to spike which leads to more hormones being produced. More hormones mean more sebum and bacteria in the skin, which you guessed it, an increase in acne.
Foods with lots of fat content like potato chips, french fries, anything that is cooked with hydrogenated oil should be avoided. I know it can be difficult not to eat things like potato chips and deep fried foods because they are so tempting. I had a hard time when I first started to make changes to my diet. What motivated me to make the change was acne. Acne has caused so much distress, embarrassment, anxiety and depression, that in itself was a good enough reason to give me the will power to make the change. As a result of my decision, I have never been happier when I look in the mirror.
Try making these changes and you will see huge results in your acne condition. Effective acne treatments take time, there are no quick fixes to acne. I wish there was such a thing as “acne gone over night.” I’m confident you will be amazed to see how quickly your acne starts to clear up once you try these acne treatments.
